STAKING A NEW CLAIM FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography has long figured in History as a means of expression and not just a documentaron of reality or mere technical instru-ment. With the 6th anniversan/ of the creation of the Centre for Photography within the Museums Group of the Cabildo (Island Council) of Tenerife, this third Photography Biennial takes on special meaning. Not only does it help consolídate it as an event in itself and part of the Island's cultural activities, bul it also reaffirms the desire to lend Ímpetus to, and serve as support and a comple-ment to, the photographic creations of authors from these shores and beyond.
PhotoNovember aims to bring together artists, experts and institu-tions, thereby reopening a forum for young and established authors to get to know each other and compare their work, a forum for classi-cal and experimental styles alike. In doing so, it has adopted non-exclusive, broad and open quality criteria, as demanded by the tre-mendous diversity of the tenden-cies and languages of the most accesible form of arí this century. It is worth recalling that the goals pursued by the Centre for Photography, in line with the ove-rall objectives of the Museums as regards the scientific, pedagogic and heritage aspects, are clearly being achieved, as can be seen ¡n the gradual increase in the number of visitors to temporary exhibilions, in the recuperaron, conservation and diffusion of collections and the open cooperation with other institu-tions and bodies. These results are a reflection of our determinaron to divulge and promote photography as a means of documentation and expression, and also of the accep-tance by a large part of society. I am convinced that the enthusiasm and ability of the new head of museums ¡n the Cabildo, Carmen Rosa García Montenegro, and the
professional qualíties of the staff of the Museums Group will further enhance the results of this new edi-tion of PhotoNovember. PhotoNovember ¡s open to the enti-re island, and welcomes its partici-pation. I hope that the present spi-rit of cooperation and participaron between the instltutions whose support has made it possible will continué in the future. I should like to welcome and at the same time express my gratitude to authors and visitors and express the hope that this Biennial will lay the foun-dations for a generation of new artists.
